GUELPH, Ont. (February 6, 2011) - A strong penalty kill that kept the Guelph Gryphons off the scoresheet on seven opportunities was the highlight of a performance which saw the Queen's Gaels win by a 4-1 score and extend their winning streak to four games.
Rookie
Alex Cieslowski of Oakville, Ont. got the Gaels off to a flying start as she started the scoring for Queen's under three minutes into the game. Despite a strong defensive effort in the first from Queen's, Kaitlyn Mora of Guelph, Ont. put a puck by
Karissa Savage of Calgary on one of four Gryphons shots in the period. The goal would be the extent of Guelph's scoring for the remainder of the game.
Queen's had a strong start to the second as
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont. scored a power play goal six minutes into the period on the Gaels second power play of the frame.
Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont. scored the first of two Gaels goals in the third period on a play directly in front of the Gryphons goal. Queen' had a scare in the third when Guelph was granted a penalty shot which would have brought the Gryphons within one. However, Mora missed the net and Guelph would not come close for the remainder of the game.
Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont. would add an empty net goal to seal the win for the Gaels.
Morgan McHaffie led the Gaels in scoring with a goal and an assist. The two points makes McHaffie the fourth leading scorer in the OUA with 26 points as she passed Laurier rookie Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ontario.
Kelsey Thomson still leads the Gaels in points and is tied for second in the OUA in points with 31.
Karissa Savage stood tall in net, only surrendering the one goal on 16 shots.
The Gaels will look to continue their win streak next Saturday against the Toronto Varsity Blues at home in the Kingston Memorial Centre. Puck drop is set for 8:30 pm.
