KINGSTON, Ont. (February 12, 2011) – Led by the duo of
Natalie Fisher and
Natalie Gray, the Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team (12-6) knocked off the top team in the OUA, the McMaster Marauders (15-3), in four sets Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).
Set scores were 25-27, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16.
Fisher, of Burlington, Ont., and Gray, of Oshawa, Ont., both recorded a season-best 17 kills in the match as they overpowered the Marauders defence which came into the game as one of the best in the conference. Fisher also added a match-high 19 digs while Gray added 13 digs.
Shannon Walsh of Kingston, Ont., filling in for
Becky Billings of Ottawa, who was injured in warmup, also played a solid defensive match for Queen's as she recorded 15 digs.
Kailee Stock of Newmarket, Ont., was the top scorer on the day for McMaster as she had eight kills to go along with two service aces.
Aside from a solid effort on both sides of the ball, the Gaels also served very well, recording 15 aces to the Marauders eight. The Gaels also won the hitting percentage battle, outhitting McMaster 14.8% to 7.6%.
The victory, which snapped a two-game losing streak for Queen's, keeps the Gaels hopes alive for finishing second in the OUA East. If the Gaels can knock off the Gryphons tomorrow afternoon, they will finish tied with Ottawa for second in the division. However, the Gaels hold the tiebreaker over the Gee-Gees which would allow them to host the OUA Quarter-final next week.
Queen's and Guelph will square off Sunday afternoon at 12:00pm at the ARC.
