LONDON, Ont. (November 13, 2011) - The Queen's Gaels men's rugby team battled hard on Sunday afternoon against the Western Mustangs in the men's rugby OUA Championship game but were unnable to complete a second half comeback as the Western Mustangs secured the win 21-15.
Western would get on the board first as they put up the day's first try only two minutes into the first half. The Mustangs failed to convert on the conversion however, resulting in a 5-0 lead over the Gaels.
Queen's didn't take long to respond as only a few minutes after the Mustangs' score,
Liam Underwood of Toronto scored a successful penalty conversion cutting the Western lead down to 5-3.
Western continued to put the pressure on the Gaels scoring a penalty kick followed by a try halfway through the first frame to give the Mustangs a 10 point 13-3 lead over the Gaels. Late in the half with the Mustangs bearing down for a final score before the first half finished the Gaels held strong to prevent any chance. After the first half it was Western out in front by a 13-3 score.
The Gaels jumped on the Mustangs to start the second half, the team managed to push to ball up the field and after repeated attempts it would be
Scott Kyle of Singapore for the try. The Gaels score resulted in a five point deficit early in the second half as they trailed 13-8.
A strong Western team finally broke down the Gaels defence for the first points in the second half of the game on a try. The Mustangs extended their lead to ten points once again.
With time running out and the Gaels' season on the line
Matthew Wolfe of Toronto punched through the Mustangs line for a try. Underwood tacked on a successful conversion to draw the game close once more as they Mustangs led 18-15.
In the end, the Western Mustangs were too strong and scored a successful penalty try for the final points of the game with the final score set at 21-15 for the Mustangs who claim the OUA Championship.
