KINGSTON, Ont. (November 10, 2011) - The Queen's Gaels will look for their second men's rugby title in the past three seasons on Sunday when they take on the Western Mustangs.
The Gaels advanced to the OUA final last weekend with a strong win over the McMaster Marauders on Tindall Field. The Gaels held the defending champs to just 10 points, while putting forth a strong team effort to get the big semifinal win, 32-10. Toronto native
Liam Underwood was the Gaels leading scorer as he put up 12 points on one try, two conversions and a penalty goal. The Gaels also received tries from Tommy Krikham of Vancouver,
Scott Kyle of Singapore, Dan Moor of Toronto and
Mike Wong of Barrie, Ont.
The semifinal match was the second time this season the Gaels defeated McMaster by a fair margin as Queen's also beat the Marauders by a 47-3 scoreline in September.
Looking forward to Western, the 2011 edition of the OUA Championship will see two heated rugby rivals renew acquaintances for a second time this year. The Mustangs handed the Gaels their only loss this season in a tightly contested 13-7 game. The Gaels received all seven of the points from Underwood but ultimately fell just short against a strong Mustangs squad in the game which ultimately determined first place in the OUA.
The Gaels will look to take home the OUA gold in their second trip to London and snap their two game losing streak against Western. They have not defeated the Mustangs since the 2009 championship game when the Gaels won 23-19.
The Gaels and Mustangs will kick off at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London, Ont. this Sunday at 1:00 pm.
