| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 18, 2011) - The Waterloo Warriors took home both the men's and women's OUA golf Championships presented by Subway in Kingston, Ontario. Both men and women battled through tough winds on the final day of action.

The men's team entered day two at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club trailing the first place team from Queen's by five strokes. The team was led by strong play from individual leader Garret Rank of Elmira, Ont. who finished the tournament at two-over and shot an impressive 68 in today's final day.

On the team leaderboard, Waterloo came home with the Championship with a combined team score of 594, followed by the Queen's Gaels at 600 and Western Mustangs at 601.

On the individual circuit, Rank topped all golfers finishing two-over for the tournament taking home the gold medal. Guelph's Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont. who finished four-over took home the silver while the Gaels' Russell Bowie of Mississauga, Ont. who shot six-over brought home bronze thanks to his 73 second round score.

Finishing out the first team all-stars were Western's Charles Fitzsimmons of North York, Ont. who shot a six-over and Jordan Oudyk of Oshawa, Ont. who finished eight-over.

Along with Bowie as part of the silver medal Queen's team were Mark Welsh of London, Ont., Taylor Henderson of Richmond, Hill, Ont., Matt Courchene of Carleton Place, Ont. and Echo Chan of Kingston, Ont.

On the women's side, no amount of wind or overcast skies could throw the Waterloo Warriors off their game.  With a total combined score of 486, the Warriors were victorious.

Finishing in second place was the Western Mustangs team, who were 18 strokes behind the Warriors at 504, while the Guelph Gryphons faired one stroke more in third place, scoring 505.

The Windsor Lancers' Meaghan Pototschnik of Stratford, Ont. posted an impressive 77 in the final round and took home the individual gold for the tournament. Potoschnick's two-day scores were 82 and 77, putting her 15-over two shots lower than round one leader from the Gryphon's, Christine Fraser of Kingston, Ont.

Rounding out the top three and tied for second place were Fraser and Waterloo Warrior, Jane Tang of Toronto at 17-over. The Varsity Blues Laura Upenieks of Toronto and Warriors Mandy Wong of Calgary, Alta. round out the first-team all-stars.

Monday recap:
Men:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 17, 2011) - At the end of a windy day one at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club, the Queen's Gaels and Western Mustangs were found at the top of the team and individual leaderboards at the 2011 Subway OUA Golf Championships.

On the team leaderboard, the Queen's Gaels were at the top of the pack as they shot a team round of 300. The Western Mustangs were right behind with a 301 while the Guelph Gryphons, Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors were all within five strokes of the Gaels.

On the individual circuit, Western's Charles Fitzsimmons of Toronto led the pack after shooting a one-over round of 71. Western teammate Traynor Turkiewicz of Brantford, Ont. and Guelph Gryphon Chris Hemmerich rounded out the top three as they both shot two-over 72s. Russell Bowie of Mississauga, Ont. was the closest member of the Gaels as he shot a 73 and sits in a tie for fourth place.

The Gaels had a good team showing beyond Bowie as Matt Courchene of Carleton Place, Ont. shot a 74 to put him in a tie for sixth, while Taylor Henderson of Gormley, Ont. was one stroke behind Courchene with a 75. Mark Welsh of London, Ont. and Echo Chan of Kingston, Ont. rounded out the Gaels performances with rounds of 78 and 79 respectively.

The teams will return for round two at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club and tee-off on October 18 in the morning, with hopes of better weather ahead of them.

Women:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 17, 2011) - The rain weathered course of Loyalist Country Club posed a tough day for the Women's 2011 Subway OUA Golf Championship.

Despite the grueling conditions, the low round of the day was posted by the Guelph Gryphons' Christina Fraser who shot a blistering 77 to put her team in the lead of the championship. Brock Badger Kristine Littlefield, a Brampton, Ontario native, finished three shots behind Fraser while Toronto Varsity Blue Laura Upenieks and Windsor Lancer Meaghan Potoschnik of Stratford, Ont. rounded out the top three, five shots back of Fraser.

The Guelph Gryphons sit atop the team leaderboard with their score of 250 after round one. The Waterloo Warriors are close behind as they shot a 251 to keep things close heading in to round two, while the Western Mustangs round out the top three - five shots behind Guelph with a round of 255.

The wet and windy conditions did play a factor for the host Queen's Gaels who finished their first round in sixth place on the team standings. Leading the Gaels was Captain Hailey Ingleson of Oakville, Ont., who carded a respective 86, putting her in 12th.  Close at her heels was teammate Karen MacKay from the United Kingdom who shot an 89 and is tied for 14th place.  Newmarket native, Jennifer Kates, posted a 100 and is tied for 26th, while first year Alexandra Rawn of Toronto, Ont., rounded out the team with a 105 (30th place).

The teams will tee-off tomorrow morning, with bright skies and warmer temperatures in the forecast.  With 18 holes left to play in the Women's OUA Golf Championships, the tournament will be wide open as each team will have plenty of time to gain some ground and finish the tournament in a strong way.

Pre-Tournament Release:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 16, 2011) - The 2011 OUA Golf Championship presented by Subway tees off tomorrow at both the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club and Loyalist Golf and Country Club in Kingston, Ont. Queen's will play host this year as OUA men and women's golf teams compete for both the team title and individual accolades. Practice round began Sun. Oct. 16, and the first round gets underway Mon. Oct. 17. The OUA Golf Championship concludes Tues. Oct. 18.

Last year's men's champion, the Western Mustangs, will be looking to defend their title against a competitive men's field. The Mustangs have achieved moderate success in 2011, making appearances at a number of tournaments. The Mustangs finished third at both the Waterloo Invitational and the McMaster Invitational. A young squad, Western has returned the majority of last year's banner winning team, and will rely on 2010 second team all-star Charles Fitzsimmons (Toronto, Ont.), Traynor Turkiewicz, Bryan Killeleagh (London, Ont.) and Cole Fulton for strong performances.

Western edged the competition last year, but as always OUA men's golf is a close field. Expect the 2010 silver medal winning Waterloo Warriors to contend once again this year. The host-squad Queen's Gaels and Guelph Gryphons will also be looking to improve upon their third place performance.

On the women's side, the Waterloo Warriors will be looking for a repeat of their 2010 banner winning performance. The Warriors captured silver at the Western Invitational held in late September, and Devon Rizzo (Brantford, Ont.) showed fine form finishing in second place behind Guelph's Christine Frazer (Kingston, Ont.) The Warriors followed up that performance with gold at the local Waterloo Invitational, shooting four ahead of second-place Toronto. The Warriors also took top spot at the Gryphons Invitational, where Rizzo defended her 2010 title by shooting an even par 71. The Warriors wrapped up their tournament schedule in Hamilton at the McMaster Invitational. In a small female field consisting of only two schools, Rizzo fired her way to another first place finish, and teammate Jane Tang (Toronto) was not far behind, shooting three strokes higher for second place.

The women's field is growing more competitive each year, and the defending champions will be challenged by a number of highly skilled opponents. 2010 OUA first team all-star Laura Upenieks (Toronto) and Rebecca Priest (Toronto) are two Varsity Blues golfers who have been making a case for themselves this season by winning the Waterloo Invitational, and Toronto Invitational, respectively. Toronto will be looking to take this momentum to improve upon their second place finish at last year's Championship event.
