KINGSTON, Ont. (January 13, 2011) - The Queen's Gaels volleyball teams will look to continue their strong play as they host the Waterloo Warriors and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks this weekend.
The Gaels women have been dominant since the start of the season as they have gone 7-1 in regular season play and have only lost 8 sets all season, first in the OUA East.
Last weekend the Gaels welcomed the new year with a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16) victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The win was their tenth in a row over Lakehead. Aurora, Ontario's
Katie Matthews led the Gaels with 15 kills, eight digs, three blocks, and three service aces. Matthews has been one of the Gaels' strongest performers all season long and will look to continue that this weekend.
The men's team currently sits in a three-way tie for second in the OUA alongside Guelph and McMaster. This upcoming weekend will be am important tune-up for the Gaels as they play a pivotal game against first place Western one week from Saturday.
The Gaels were last in action this past Sunday against the RMC Paladins. The Gaels disposed of RMC in straight sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-18) thanks to strong performances from Toronto natives
Will Sidgwick and
Michael Amoroso who had 14 points apiece.
Both teams will play Waterloo on Saturday before facing Laurier on Sunday. The women's games will begin at noon while the men are scheduled to start at 2:00 pm. All matches will be played in the Main Gym of the ARC.
