Gaels to raise Vanier Cup banner in home opener

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 8, 2010) – The Queen's Gaels (0-1) will be back at Richardson Stadium this Sunday for the first time this season as they take on the Windsor Lancers (1-1).

These two teams last met during week four of the 2009 season; Queen's emerged from that matchup on the winning side of a 42-13 final score. Queen's kicker Dan Village had an outstanding eighteen point performance (three field goals, five singles, and four converts) to seal the game for the Gaels.

Queen's had their bye week in week two and now plays their first game since dropping their season opener by a score of 23-18 to the McMaster Marauders. Despite the loss, the Gaels had many encouraging performances in week one. Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C., threw for 315 yards in his debut as Queen's starting quarterback. On the defensive side of the ball, Sam Sabourin of Stittsville, Ont., also made his first start for the Gaels and set the single-game team record for tackles with 13. Sabourin was named the CIS Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

Meanwhile, the Lancers are coming into Kingston after a 26-17 victory over the University of Toronto. The Lancers were paced by their starting quarterback Sam Malian of LaSalle, Ont., who was 24 of 34, passing the ball for 257 yards against the Varsity Blues. Defensively, Windsor has been led by Akeem Whonder of Mississauga, Ont., who is the team leader in tackles (13.5).

Despite the lopsided victories of recent memory in this series, the Lancers will look to spoil the Gaels' home opener this Sunday. Queen's will need to overcome a strong passing attack led by Malian and receiver Jordan Brescacin of Tecumseh, Ont. and find a way to move through a solid defensive secondary if they are to get back into the win column this week.

Sunday's game will have a very festive atmosphere as the Gaels will be hoisting their fourth Vanier Cup banner. 2009 team captains Danny Brannagan (now playing with the Toronto Argonauts) and Osie Ukwuoma will be on hand to take part in the banner raising.
