TORONTO, Ont. (September 19, 2010)
Matt Kelly of Toronto built off of his strong performance from the season opener by scoring two tries against the University of Toronto to lead the Gaels to a 57-3 victory on the road.
The Gaels overcame a strong performance by the host Varsity Blues thanks to a well rounded team effort. Queen's jumped to a 19 point lead over Toronto at half thanks to tries by
Myles Dingwall of Ottawa,
Graham Turner of Oakville, Ont., and Kelly. Dan Moor of Toronto added conversions after the latter two tries, and finished the day as Queen's leading scorer with 14 points – all from conversions.
The Gaels opened the gates in the second half as Kelly scored his second try of the game. Ryan Guichon and
Russell Gray, both of Toronto soon followed with tries of their own.
Burke MacDonald of Cornwall, Ont. and
Michael Van der Westhuizen of Victoria both added tries before Toronto countered with their lone score, a penalty.
Brendan McGovern of Ottawa rounded out the scoring for the Gaels before time expired.
Mike Wong Jr. of Barrie, Ont. and
Matthew Wolfe of Toronto both added strong performances of their own, despite not registering on the scoresheet.
The victory was another in a long line of victories against the Varsity Blues, as the Gaels have yet to drop a match against the University of Toronto since
Peter Huigenbos began coaching the squad. The Gaels will be in action again next weekend in their first home game as they take on the Western Mustangs in a rematch of last year's OUA Championship Game. The Gaels took that match by a score of 23-19. The rematch is set to start next Saturday at 1:00 pm on Kingston Field.
