Gaels looking to return to .500 against Ottawa

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 23, 2010) - The Queen's Gaels (1-2) will face their toughest test of the season this weekend as the nationally ranked no. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees (4-0) come to Richardson Stadium.

The last matchup between these two teams was a defensive struggle. With Danny Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) out of the lineup for the Gaels, then rookie Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C., and Thomas Howes of Parham, Ont. shared the quarterbacking duties. The Gaels took the matchup by a score of 20-8 on the strength of a 147 yard rushing performance by Jimmy Therrien of Montreal, and several big days on defence. Shomari Williams of Brampton, Ont. made his Queen's debut, sacking Ottawa's Bradley Sinopoli twice and recovering one fumble. Jimmy Allin of Belleville, Ont. had two interceptions, and Joshua Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont. had another as the Gaels forced eight turnovers in total on the day.

Queen's is coming off of a tough 21-15 loss at the hands of the Guelph Gryphons last week. Chapdelaine had a difficult time finding a rhythm on offence and compiled 103 yards passing and three interceptions. First year QB Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont. spelled Chapdelaine in the third quarter and found more success as he threw for 119 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Receiver Chris Ioannides of Toronto was on the other side of that passing touchdown, Queen's only one on the day.

The Gee-Gees on the other hand are coming off of a close 43-35 victory over McMaster to preserve their unblemished regular season record. Ottawa quarterback Sinopoli threw for 446 yards, with four touchdowns and four interceptions to lead the Gee-Gees offensively. Cyril Adjeitey was Ottawa's leading receiver as he had five receptions for 152 yards, including a 106 yard touchdown catch that sealed Ottawa's victory.

The Gaels will be looking to continue their regular season streak against the Gee-Gees, as Queen's has taken the last two matchups. Historically, Ottawa has the edge in the matchup as the Gaels are 41-48 all-time against the Gee-Gees dating back to 1889. The game has much significance for both sides as the Gaels will be looking to get back to the .500 mark, while the Gee-Gees will try to remain undefeated this season.

Kickoff between Queen's and Ottawa is set for 1:00 pm at Richardson Stadium.
