Gaels look to keep streak alive against Gryphons

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 16, 2010) – The Queen's Gaels (1-1) continue their OUA schedule this week on the road at Alumni Stadium as they take on the Guelph Gryphons (2-0).

These two teams last met in week one last season as the Gaels took a thriller by a score of 52-49. This match was a see-saw battle marked by many great individual performances on both sides of the ball. Guelph was led by quarterback Justin Dunk of Guelph, Ont. who was 23 for 44 passing and amassed 433 yards as well as four touchdowns. Not to be outdone, his Queen's counterpart Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. threw for 495 yards and three touchdowns. Jimmy Allin of Belleville, Ont. paced the Gaels with three return touchdowns (2 punt return, 1 kickoff return) and 439 return yards.

The Gaels won the game thanks to a field goal by backup kicker Mike Petranovic of Toronto as time expired. Petranovic was a last minute replacement for starter Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C.

Queen's is coming off of their first victory of the season, a 40-7 win over the Windsor Lancers at Richardson Stadium. The game was highlighted by Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C. and his performance in what was his first home start for the Gaels since becoming the starting quarterback. Chapdelaine amassed 263 all-purpose yards (189 passing, 74 rushing), and had a touchdown through the air and on the ground. Chapdelaine was joined on the scoreboard by Jimmy Therrien of Montreal, Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., and Chris Ioannides of Toronto as they all added touchdowns of their own.

Dan Village also provided a performance of note for the Gaels as he recorded 10 points. Village hit field goals from 16, 19, and 18 yards away and his second quarter punt sailed 86 yards for a single point and goes down as the longest punt in Queen's history.

The Gryphons, on the other hand, take the field well rested after their bye week. They jumped out to a 2-0 start after victories against Toronto (15-13) and York (26-2). Guelph has been carried to this point by their strong rushing attack. Led by fifth year running back Nick Fitzgibbon of Puslinch, Ont. who is currently the OUA's leading rusher and dual threat quarterback Chris Rossetti of Mississauga, Ont., the Gryphons currently boast the OUA's highest rushing average (187.5 rush yards per game) to this point in the season.

The Gaels will be looking to continue their recent string of success against the Gryphons as they have not dropped a contest to Guelph since 2004, a 27-26 loss. In order to keep this streak alive the Gaels will certainly need to maintain their strong rushing defence from the victory against Windsor (the Gaels only allowed 15 yards rushing), and prevent Guelph's star receiver Jedd Gardner of Niagara Falls, Ont. from playing a factor on the score sheet.

Kickoff between the Gaels and the Gryphons is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Alumni Stadium in Guelph.
