EDMONTON (March 14, 2010) – Led by skip
Jonathan Beuk of Mississauga, Ont., the Queen's Gaels men's curling team defeated the UPEI Panthers 7-6 to win the Canadian University Curling Championships Sunday afternoon.
The victory marks the Gaels second national championship of the season, following the Vanier Cup title by the football team back in November.
The match was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams, similar to their first outing when the Panthers defeated the Gaels in the final end of their round-robin matchup. However, on this day, it was the Gaels who were able to come out on top.
After the two teams were tied at three after five ends, the Gaels scored a key two points in the sixth end and by holding the Panthers to just a single in the seventh end, the team was able to take control of the match.
Another two points in the eighth end gave Queen's some breathing room but UPEI responded with two of their own in the ninth to put the pressure on the Gaels coming home. But with the hammer in their possession, the Gaels were able to run the Panthers out of rocks and capture the national championship.
Beuk, who was excellent all week and made a number of clutch shots for the team, was named the a First Team All-Canadian at the Skip position. Lead
Scott Chadwick of Marysville, Ont., was named a Second Team All-Canadian at his position.
The victory also means that Queen's will represent Canada at the 2011 FISU Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey. That event is scheduled to run from January 26 to February 7, 2011. More information on the event can be found by clicking
