Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont., recorded his 1,300 career point as the Queen's Gaels defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 70-62 on Saturday in OUA men's basketball.
Leger, needed just 16 points to attain the milestone and finished the game with 22 points. He also recorded his fifth consecutive double-double registering a game-high 13 rebounds. The double-double was also the CIS player of year candidate's 15th of the season.
The fourth-year sociology major now sits in the top-25 career leaders in the OUA. He is just six points behind Jan-Michael Nation for 23rd position. Nation played for the Ryerson Rams from 1998-2002.
In the win over Toronto, Queen's
Ryan Hairsine of St. Mary's, Ont., contributed a regular season high 20-points, while
Chris Barrett of Vancouver posted a CIS career high 13 points. Barrett is also a member of the 2009 OUA championship Queen's rugby team earning OUA All-Star honours in November.
Rob Paris of St. Catharines, Ont., was the Varsity Blues' top scorer posting 17 points in the loss. Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo tallied 10 rebounds to lead Toronto.
With the win, Queen's sits in third place of the OUA East with 20 points and a 10-9 record. The Gaels are four points ahead of Ryerson and Toronto who both have 16 points but have a game in hand on Queens. Carleton leads the East Division with 34 points, while Ottawa is second with 32 points.
The Gaels will tangle with the top two teams in the East Division next weekend at the Main Gym in Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) on campus at Queen's. On Friday (Feb 12), Queen's will contend against Ottawa who is currently in second place with 32 points. Saturday (Feb 13) is a 'belairdirect Rivalry Game' against the first place Carleton Ravens. The Ravens have 34 points.
