Gaels finish fourth in OUA women’s volleyball

HAMILTON (February 27, 2010) – The 2009-10 season came to a close for the Queen's women's volleyball team on Saturday afternoon as the Gaels dropped a 3-0 decision to the Western Mustangs in the OUA bronze medal match at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

Elyssa Heller of Highland Park, Ill, USA, was named player of the game for Queen's with Jacqueline Robinson of Vancouver earning the same distinction for the Mustangs.

Western took the first two sets by the score of 25-16 and 25-13. Down, 2-0 and their season on the line, the Gaels rebounded with a strong third set, set pushing the Mustangs to the limit but eventually losing a 25-20. With the win, the Mustangs won the OUA bronze medal and Queen's finished fourth.

Heller tallied six kills in the game to go along with 12 digs in the loss for Queen's. # Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary was Queen's top scorer with seven points recording six kills and one ace. Natalie Gray# of Oshawa, Ont., posted six kills and a game high 14 digs. Libero Becky Billings of Ottawa also had 12 digs in the loss.

Julie Lockwood of Calgary and Kristin Collins of Whitby, Ont., split time in the setter's position getting credit with 12 assists apiece.

Western's Caleigh Whitaker of Sharon, Ont., was the game's leading scorer with 14 points on 12 kills and two aces. Sara Farrell of London, Ont., and Sarah Lowry of Calgary each recorded 10 points while Robinson had nine points and seven digs as Western's player of the game.

NOTES: Queen's finishes the season at 23-18 overall and 14-8 in OUA play... This was the Gaels first appearance in the OUA Final Four tournament since the 2004 season where they won a bronze medal... Last night the Gaels fell 3-1 to Final Four host McMaster Marauders qualifying for the bronze medal game.
