OTTAWA (February 14, 2010) – The Carleton Ravens ended a championship drought in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) fencing on Saturday and Sunday, winning the OUA men's and women's team titles at the Norm Fenn Gym on the campus of Carleton University.
It marks the first men's fencing title for Carleton since 2001, and only the fourth time the Ravens have won the Charles Walters Trophy. It is Carleton's first women's title since 1981, and just the second Kay Aoyama Trophy in school history.
It was the narrowest of victories for the Carleton men, winning the team competition by just one point over silver medalist and defending men's champion, the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Queen's Gaels were awarded team bronze. Carleton successfully defended the sabre team title, Toronto earned the foil title for a third straight year while the RMC Paladins repeated as men's epee champions.
The Ravens women had an easier time compared to their male counterparts, winning the team title by 63 points ahead of second place RMC. Defending champion Toronto finished in third place. Carleton was also awarded the epee and foil team titles, while the Varsity Blues went home with the sabre crown for the second straight year.
Individually, it was Mike Ivancovic (Kitchener, Ont.) of the Ravens and
Scott Bowman (Milton, Ont.) of the Gaels receiving the George Tully Trophy as the male fencers most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship. Bowman was the winner of the Schwende-Tully Trophy as individual sabre champion, while Ivancovic finished second. Gordon Geringas (Toronto) of the Varsity Blues won bronze.
Tim Svidnytskiy (Aurora, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers earned the Desjarlais Trophy as men's epee champion. Former epee champions Mark Jones (London, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs won silver and Brendan Kilburn (Kingston, Ont.) of RMC was awarded bronze. Carleton's Scott McNeil (Calgary) earned the Charles Walter Trophy as individual foil champion. Varsity Blues fencers Kamil Karbonowski (Milton, Ont.) and Kyle Chan (Hong Kong) won silver and bronze, respectively.
Andrea Csiba (London, Ont.) of Western and Sarah Rogers (Yarmouth, N.S.) of RMC were co-winners of the Dave O'Donnell Trophy awarded to the female fencers most proficient in skill, style , and sportsmanship. Rogers earned a bronze medal in sabre, while Csiba finished fifth in epee.
Ravens student-athletes swept the individual epee, foil and sabre titles. Gillian Turnbull (Winnipeg) won the Dr. Allan English Trophy as epee champion, with Ravens teammate Rachael Gardener (Ottawa) taking silver. Rachael Middleton (Victoria) of RMC placed third.
Carleton's Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa) won the Maitre Ken Wood Trophy as foil champion, while teammate Jennifer Dunev (Ottawa) and Jodi Marr (Wainfleet, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues earned silver and bronze, respectively. Adrienne Sukunda (Gloucester, Ont.) of the Ravens was the individual sabre champion, with Toronto's Kelly Doyle (Troy, N.Y.) earning silver.
The Queen's women finished fifth overall in the team standings and were led Kimberly Sakkal of Unionville, Ont., who finished eighth in the women's individual sabre.
All student-athletes earning gold, silver and bronze medals in individual competition are also OUA all-stars.
