WATERLOO, Ont. (February 13, 2010) - The No. 8 ranked Queen's Gaels women's hockey team nearly pulled off the biggest upset of the season but fell just short losing 4-3 in a shootout to the No.2 ranked Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks.
Laurier's Andrea Ironside of Collingwood, Ont., was the only shooter to net a marker in the shootout as she beat Queen's goaltender
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., in the first round. Queen's was unable to score on any of their three attempts as Liz Knox of Stoufville, Ont., was able to shut the door.
With the win, Laurier remains undefeated winning their 25th straight of the season. While both teams have already locked up the first and second seeds in the OUA, this game was a huge morale boost for Queen's as they went shot for shot with the No. 2 ranked team in Canada.
Laurier opened the scoring early in the first at 3:43, but Queen's was able to counter late in the first period.
Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., scored her 15th of the season with 1:18 left in the first. However, Laurier answered quickly to go back on top with only 16 seconds left in the first to go into the break up 2-1.
Laurier looked to be in control when Fiona Lester of Peterborough, Ont., put the Golden Hawks up 3-1 just over halfway into the game as Laurier has not allowed more than four goals in a single game this season. But
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., cut the deficit to 3-2 with her goal just under three minutes later and
Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., tied the game with just under nine minutes left in the third period.
Dodd-Moher was incredible in net stopping 25 of 28 shots in a losing effort. She was unable to move her personal winning streak to six games.
Shelby Aitcheson of London, Ont., added two assists in her effort Saturday.
With the loss the Gaels fall to 18-5-3 on the season and will look to wrap up their regular season on February 14th with match against the Waterloo Warriors. Waterloo currently sits in ninth place in the OUA standings and will be playing their final game of the season. Queen's is 2-0 against the Warriors this season. The game will be at the Columbia Ice Field in Waterloo at 2:00 pm.
