TORONTO (November 7, 2010) – The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team lost another nail biter falling 4-3 in overtime to the York Lions.
The loss marks the third consecutive time the Gaels have lost a game in overtime or the shootout.
Queen's forward
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont, tied the game with under two minutes to play in the third, but it was all for naught as the Lions scored one minute into overtime handing the Gaels the loss.
Courtney Unruh of Fort. St. John, B.C. registered two goals in the win for York including the game winner in the overtime period.
The loss drops Queen's to a 4-3-3 record, good for fifth place in the OUA. They are just a single point behind Windsor for fourth place.
Queen's was the first to strike in the opening period as
Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., registered her fifth of the season at 5:09. York would tie the game before the period expired to bring the teams even before the intermission.
The second period saw the Gaels outshoot the Lions, but they could not solve York goaltender Sydney McMurter of Orillia, Ont. The Lions would score the only goal of the period, when Unruh slipped one past Queen's
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., six minutes into the period.
The Gaels stormed out of the gate in the third as
Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., scored an equalizer two minutes into the frame. It appeared to be the only scoring either team would do until Jennifer Petkovics of Mississauga, Ont., gave the Lions a one goal lead with four minutes remaining on the clock.
Dodd-Moher finished the game with 25 saves on 29 shots for Queen's.
Queen's will look to break its three-game losing skid when they contend against the Brock Badgers in St. Catherines next Saturday (Nov. 13). Puck drop is set for 7:15pm.
