KINGSTON, Ont. (November 26, 2010) – After the first day of round robin play at the 2010-11 Subway OUA Water Polo Championships, the Carleton Ravens lead the women's standings after picking up victories over McMaster and York.
In the men's competition, four teams earned single victories on Day 1, including Carleton, Toronto, McMaster and Queen's to sit tied atop their respective groups.
The competition kicked off with the host Queen's Gaels taking on the Toronto Varsity Blues in the women's competition. Despite a strong defensive effort from the Gaels, Toronto earned a 15-4 victory. Ainsley Vettese of Calgary, and Nicole Brown of Burlington, Ont., each scored four goals for the Varsity Blues while
Carla Henderson of Nanaimo, B.C., led Queen's with two goals in the match.
As for the Ravens, they picked up a win over York in their first game before holding off the McMaster Marauders 7-4 in their second match. Kailey Flower of Hamilton, Kaitlyn Sennema of Ottawa and Meaghan Broddy of Calgary, all had two goals to lead the Ravens. McMaster's goals were scored by four different players.
In men's action, Carleton earned their first win of the championships with a hard-fought 14-11 win over McMaster. Rookie Charles Bouwer of Ottawa, led the Ravens with six goals in the match while Jack Park of Waterdown, Ont., replied with six of his own for the Marauders.
Game #2 for the men saw two Toronto rivals face off with the Varsity Blues taking on the York Lions. The defending champion Varsity Blues easily picked up a 19-2 victory as Luke Spooner of Auckland, New Zealand led the way with six goals.
In another close match, the third game of the night saw McMaster topple the Western Mustangs by a count of 13-8. Park continued his outstanding beginning to the championships, leading the Marauders again in goal scoring with five on the game. The Mustangs received a pair of goals from four different players including Matthew and Daniel Abraham of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Yevgen Demidenok of London, Ont., and Gregory Hoegy of Kitchener, Ont.
The final match of the night was perhaps the most thrilling of the day as the host Gaels took on York in men's action.
After the Lions built a 6-3 lead at halftime, Queen's scored four unanswered goals to earn a 7-6 advantage. York would manage to tie the game with 39 seconds left but Queen's would get one more opportunity and they would make it count. With the clock winding down,
Riley Millington of Belleville, Ont., fired a shot past the York goalie with just 0.5 seconds left to give the Gaels the win.
Scott Mackinnon of Comox, B.C., was the top scorer in the match scoring three goals for Queen's while Straun Wefers of Toronto, matched Mackinnon's three goals with three of his own for the Lions.
Day 2 will kick off tomorrow morning at 10:00 am with McMaster taking on York in the first women's game of the day. The first men's game of the day sees the host Gaels take on Toronto at 11:20 am.
