CHARLOTTETOWN (November 11, 2010) - The No. 1 Queen's Gaels (1-0) have advanced to the semifinal game with a 1-0 win over the AUS champion Cape Breton Capers (0-1) in their opening game of the CIS Women's Soccer Championship on Thursday in PEI.
Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg scored in the 14th minute providing all the offence the Gaels needed to advance.
Elena Corry of Hamilton recorded her second career CIS Championship shutout in the win Corry was in net last season when the Gaels defeated the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 1-0 in the opening game of the CIS Championship.
"We knew this would be a tough game as they [Cape Breton] were the hot team coming into the championship," said Tessier. "Both teams had to deal with the wind especially in the second half. I really hope it drops off before [Saturday's] semifinal."
Queen's will now face the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday at 1:00pm (AST). The Cascades, who are the Canada West champions, won their quarter-final match over the Laval Rouge et Or by a score of 2-0.
Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. almost made the score 2-0 in the second half as she nailed a shot from outside the 18 which hit the crossbar.
The Gaels, who were ranked No. 1 in the final national coaches' poll on November 2nd following a 14-2-0 regular season, are aiming for their second CIS women's soccer title since 1988 and hope to improve on a fourth place finish last year.
Wind played a factor in the game which was a constant 33km/hour from the south with gusts up to 44km/hour. Tempature at the start of the game was a chilly three degrees.
