Gaels look to qualify for OUA playoffs with a victory against York

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 21, 2010) - The Queen's Gaels (2-5) are in need of a win on Saturday if they are hoping to advance to the OUA Playoffs. The Gaels will battle the York Lions (0-7) in a contest which sees the Lions enter having lost the last 12 appearances against Queen's.

A Gaels win and a Toronto loss to the Western Mustangs will assure the Gaels of a sixth place finish in the OUA. There are additional scenarios in which the Gaels could finish as high as fifth place. (For full scenarios please click here)

Saturday's game will also celebrate the inductions of the 2010 Queen's Football Hall of Fame inductions. The induction ceremony will take place on Friday evening, but fans will be able to salute the inductees at halftime during the game.

This year's inductee class includes three teams (1956, 1964 and 1968), two builders (Bob Howes and Bob Mullen) and five players (Bill Sirman, Mark Robinson, James Osborn, Jim Aru and Paul Correale).

The Gaels enter Week #8 looking to put a disappointing second quarter against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks last Saturday in the past. Laurier exploded for 43 points in the second quarter which the Gaels were unable to recover from.

Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., was the top player for the Queen's as he rumbled for 107 yards on 8 carries. Andrew Lue of Markham, Ont., was also an impact player for the Gaels on defence as he added a 21 yard interception return to his two tackles on the afternoon. Both Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C., and Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont., saw time at quarterback as they combined to go 12 for 26 passing for 123 yards and 3 interceptions. They both contributed rushing touchdowns with Jimmy Therrien of Montreal scoring the other for Queen's

The Lions are also entering this game on a losing note as they dropped a one-sided 76-0 game to the Western Mustangs last Saturday. York simply couldn't contain the Western offence as they threw for three passing touchdowns and ran for six. Theo Feroiu and Steven Reading continue to be the Lions' stars on defence as they added 12 and 5 tackles respectively.

Queen's comes into this matchup undefeated against York all-time which dates back to 1971. Overall the Gaels hold a perfect 12-0 record against the Lions. Recently, the matchups have been particularly lopsided as the last two meetings have resulted in scores of 80-0 and 67-0 for the Gaels.

Kickoff is set for 1:00pm at Richardson Stadium.
