No. 5 Western defeats Queen’s 46-10

LONDON, Ont. (October 2, 2010) – The No. 5 Western Mustangs handed the Queen's Gaels their fourth loss of the season 46-10 on Saturday in OUA football action.

The loss drops Queen's to 1-4 while Western improves to 5-1 moving them into a tie for first place with the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee Gees. The loss, coupled with a Toronto upset victory over Ottawa pushes the Gaels to seventh place in the OUA standings.

Queen's will face Toronto next Saturday at Richardson Stadium in a game that will have playoff implications. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm with tickets available by calling 613-533-2500.

Western's Andrew Thibaudeau of Kitchener, Ont., was named the game's MVP scoring two touchdowns on four catches racking up 158 yards receiving. QB Donnie Marshall of London, Ont., completed eight passes for 228 yards with two touchdowns to Thibaudeau and one interception.

Mustang kicker, Lirim Hajrullahu of St. Catharines, Ont., was six-for-six in field goals.

For Queen's Jimmy Therrien of Montreal carried the offensive load, netting 111 yards on 20 attempts. It was Therrien's third time in his career he posted over 100 yards rushing. QB Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C., was 12 for 25 tossing 115 yards and scoring Queen's only major on the ground.

Queen's Matt Webster of Calgary, Alta, made his first career interception picking off Marshall in the third quarter to set up the Chapdelaine scoring play making the score 26-10 at the time.

John Miniaci of Toronto and Andrew Sauer of Ayr, Ont., each registered a sack in Queen's loss. CIS sack leader Frank Pankawich of Thunder Bay, Ont. made 11 tackles to lead the Gaels, while OUA rookie of the year candidate Sam Sabourin of Stittsville, Ont., registered nine tackles.

In other OUA action, Toronto upset No. 2 ranked Ottawa 40-35, No. 7 McMaster dominated McMaster dominated York 64-6 while Laurier toppled No. 10 Guelph 36-2.

NOTES: Queen's still holds the all-time series advantage over the Mustangs with a 43-40-2 overall record in 85 meetings... The last time the Gaels lost to Western was back in 2007 in the opening round of the OUA playoffs... Today's game was broadcast nationally on theScore... This was Queen's second appearance on national television this season with the first coming against Guelph in Week #4.
