Gaels shutout by Gryphons

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 24, 2010) - The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team could not complete the season sweep of the Guelph Gryphons, falling 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels were unable to solve the Guelph goaltender Danielle Skoufranis after outshooting the Gryphons 36-26. The Gaels were shut out for only the third time this season as their offence was unable to repeat its outburst that was seen on Saturday against Brock.

The Gryphons started strong with three goals in the first period and the Gaels were unable to chip away at what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. The Gryphons added a fourth goal at 17:07 of the third period to all but end the game.

Goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) did her best turning away 22 of 26 shots but the Gaels simply could not find the back of the net. It is Dodd-Moher's fifth loss of the season bringing her record to 9-5-1.

Queen's powerplay was ineffective, unable to score on any of their seven opportunities with the advantage.

With the loss the Gaels fall to 14-5-2 but still stand in second place in the OUA standing, depending on the result of the York-Toronto game later Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels look to get their offence back on track next week with a pair of games against the lowly University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks. UOIT currently sits in last place in the OUA standings with a record of 4-14-3. The Gaels have taken the only game played against UOIT this year, a 5-0 win on November 29th, 2009. The games are on January 30th and 31st both at 2:30pm and at the Kingston Memorial Center.
