GUELPH, Ont. (January 9, 2010) – OUA leading scorer
Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, to help the Gaels defeat the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Rookie goalie
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., was also a difference in the game for Queen's as she made 25 saves, including 14 in the third period, for the win.
Although the Gaels failed to open the scoring on a pair of early powerplay opportunities in the first period,
Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., ensured that they would take a lead after one. The first year forward beat Guelph goalie Chelsey Roy to give Queen's a 1-0 lead.
Conroy would extend the Gaels lead to two midway through the second period as she netted her 13th goal of the season past Roy.
The Gryphons would finally get on the board late in the second period as defenceman Emily Corbett scored on the powerplay to make the score 2-1. However, Queen's responded before the period was out as
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., scored to restore the Gaels two goal cushion.
The third period saw Guelph dominate puck possession and fire 14 shots at Dodd-Moher but the rookie goalie was up to the challenge. Conroy would seal the victory for Queen's with a shorthanded tally with less than two minutes to play as the Gaels improved to 11-3-1. The loss drops Guelph to 9-5-3 on the season.
Queen's will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to St. Catharaines to take on the Brock Badgers. Puck drop is set for 4:00 pm.
