Kingston, Ont. (April 2, 2009) –
Brienna Shaw of Vancouver has been selected to represent Canada at the 25th Summer Universiade set to take place July 1-12, 2009, in Belgrade, Serbia. Shaw, a first-year defender from Queen's was one of 20 women's soccer players named by the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) on Thursday.
Shaw had a breakout rookie season with the Gaels claiming OUA east rookie of the year and an OUA first team all-star selection. She played in 14 games in 2008 helping Queen's to the nation's fifth-ranked defence allowing only nine goals. Earlier this week she also was named Queen's top female rookie of the year
“I'm very excited about the opportunity to play for Canada and experience international play this summer,” said Shaw. “This is a great opportunity and I'm looking forward to seeing Europe while at the same time progressing my game.”
Queen's Head Coach
Dave McDowell was particularly thrilled to have Shaw selected after just her first season with the Gaels.
“We're obviously very proud to have a first-year player named to the team,” said McDowell. “We've had a number of senior players attend past games, but this is the first time a rookie will attend. She is a deserving athlete and her experience at this international event can only help our own team in the future.”
The last Queen's player to represent Canada at the women's soccer competition was Elish McConville of Ottawa in the summer of 2007.
Shaw is one of three players who will represent the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) this summer in Serbia. Joining Shaw is University of Toronto's Laura Arduini of Mississauga, Ont., and University of Ottawa's Rachael Swetnam of Halifax.
Women's soccer made its Universiade debut as a demonstration sport in 1993 when the Games were hosted in Buffalo and the women's soccer tournament was held in Hamilton. The sport became an official Universiade discipline in 2001 in Beijing, China.
Canada has finished fifth on two occasions, first in Buffalo when six teams competed in the tourney and then in Izmir, Turkey, in 2005 when 12 countries participated in the event.
