GAELS PREVAIL IN 1-0 VICTORY OVER LAKERS, ADVANCE TO OUA SEMIFINALS

The Gaels prevailed in a 1-0 win against the Nipissing Lakers in the OUA quarterfinals at Richardson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Intensity was high for the home team's first playoff game of the season, and Queen's did not disappoint.

The Gaels started out strong, earning themselves two corners in the first seven minutes of play. The teams remained closely matched, neither one allowing the other to break through their defensive line. Midway through the half, Seema Sakran (Kinesiology) drew a foul right outside the Lakers' penalty box, generating a great scoring opportunity for the home team. However, it was narrowly saved by the Nipissing goalie. Queen's held possession well, but the Lakers were quick to block any through balls, slowing the Gaels' offensive momentum. The game remained scoreless going into the second half, with both teams itching to get on the board.

The second half came with a thrilling start for the home team, as Mattson Strickler (Concurrent Education) scored the sole goal of the game in the 50th minute of play off a corner kick. Intensity was high as the Gaels fought to hold their lead with lots of time remaining on the clock. Queen's continued to roll their offense, with a cross-field pass setting up Peyton Wynn (Health Studies) for a great scoring opportunity, as they narrowly missed and hit the crossbar. The Gaels held off the Lakers' for the remainder of the game, with goalie Lily Bouvier (Economics) making three saves for the shutout. Queen's came through for the 1-0 win with a thrilled home crowd.

Up next, the Gaels will advance to the OUA semifinals on October 25th, which will be hosted by the higher seed.
