Gaels sing Blue and determine playoff fate

| By:
Kingston, Ont. (February 6, 2009) – Queen's women's volleyball playoff fate is determined, as the Gaels lost 3-2 to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday.

Queen's needed to win against Toronto to keep its hopes of a third place finish alive, but the Varsity Blues would topple those dreams with set scores of 25-23, 15-25, 22-25, 25-23 and 15-11. The loss locks Queen's into a fourth place finish and a playoff date with the York Lions.

Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., led Queen's hitting five aces, and notching 14 kills for 19 points. Queen's had four players including Gray finish with double-digit points including Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. (16), Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary (15), and Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont. (14).

Toronto relied on fourth-year, Heather Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., who captured a game high 24 points (19 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks). Bansley also led the game in digs with 21 while setter Kathleen Mahannah of Vancouver produced 37 assist for the Varsity Blues.

Tomorrow, the Gaels will host Ryerson in a meaningless game to close out the 2008-09 regular season. The game is scheduled for 6:00pm inside Bartlett Gymnasium.

Following that game, Queen's will begin preparation for the York Lions who they will meet in a one-game playoff scheduled for Saturday, February 14 in Toronto.
