Kingston, Ont. (February 6, 2009) – Julian Zamparo of Woodbridge, Ont. snapped Queen's four-game winning streak, scoring the lone goal in a shootout as the Ryerson Rams topped the Gaels 4-3 on Friday in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's hockey.
#T.J. Sutter# of Redvers, Sask.,
Scott Kenway of Calgary and
Billy Burke of Aurora, Ont. netted the goals for Queen's while Kevin Krasnowski of Pickering, Ont., Greg Payne of Thornhill, Ont., and Brent Small also of Pickering, Ont., all scored in regulation for Ryerson. Kransnowski also added an assist to lead Ryerson with two points in the game.
Brady Morrison Thamsville, Ont., turned aside 37 shots in the loss while Louie George of Waterloo, Ont., secured the win for Ryerson on 35 saves.
The shootout loss did secure a valuable point in the postseason race for the Gaels putting them in a dead heat with Ottawa for the sixth and final playoff position. Both Ottawa and Queen's have 23 points, but Ottawa has two games in hand to close the season.
Queen's chances of catching Toronto and Carleton in the playoff race did however evaporate with the loss. Toronto was able to secure the Mid-East conference with the Gaels losing, while Carleton topped Concordia 4-1 to move to 28 points, clinching a playoff position. With just two games remaining the most points the Gaels can earn is 27.
Tomorrow the Gaels will take on the Royal Military College (RMC) in the annual Carr-Harris Cup. The game celebrates the world's oldest hockey rivalry dating back to 1886. The game typically is the biggest draw for both schools and garners city-wide attention.
The Carr-Harris Cup will be broadcasts live on CFRC (101.9 locally or on the web at
