Toronto (February 28, 2009) -
Leslie Sexton of Markham, Ont., secured a silver medal in the women's 3,000 metre discipline at the 2009 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) track and field championship hosted by York University on Saturday.
Sexton finished with a time of nine minutes and 45.51 seconds just under a second behind Guelph's Lindsay Carson of Cambridge, Ont., who finished at 9:44.05. Sexton duplicated her performance from one season ago where she also claimed silver in the 3,000 metre event at the OUA championship.
Sexton has had a tough fourth year with the Gaels sustaining an aggravating foot injury during the cross-country season which has prevented her from competing in a full schedule.
Queen's 4x400 metre men's relay team also claimed a silver medal finishing just a half second behind Windsor. The team comprised of
Adrian Heller of Toronto, Tyler Nightengale of Kingston, Ont.,
Gord Frenke of Oakville, Ont. and
Michael Nishiyama of Edmonton raced to a time of 3:21.66. Windsor claimed gold in 3:21.16, while host York finished third at 3:23.91.
Other top results by Queen's student-athletes included a fourth place finish by Heller in the men's 300-metre event. He finished with a time of 35.57 seconds a second behind York's Dontae Richards Kwok who won the event. Frenke and Prime also placed seventh and eighth respectively.
In the women's 300 metre event
Jan Stirling of Wolfville, N.S. finished sixth.
Leah Larocque of Ottawa secured a seventh place finish in the women's 1,000 metre race finishing at 2:56.29. McMaster's Jillian Wyman took gold with a time of 2:50.88.
Overall both the men's and women's teams finished in eighth place. Guelph captured the women's title while Windsor secured the men's title.
Presently, Sexton and the entire men's 4x400 team will represent Queen's at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) track and field championship held March 12-14 at the University of Windsor. Queen's will determine its full contingency within the coming days.
