Gaels capture first place at Queen’s Invitational

KINGSTON, Ont. (December 1, 2009) – The Queen's Gaels figure skating team won six gold medals en route to a first place overall finish at the 2009 Queen's Invitational this past weekend at the Memorial Centre.

Melanie Graveline of Sharon, Mass., and Jena Hall of Ottawa, began the day for Queen's with a gold in the Junior Silver Similar Dance as they placed first in both the Keats Foxtrot and the Harris Tango.

Emily Young of Calgary, also won gold in the next event, the Gold Solo Dance as she scored top marks in both the Quickstep and Silver Samba.

In the Senior Silver Solo Dance, Talia Feder of Ottawa, tied for top spot with Guelph's Sandra McCubbin after a third place in the Blues category and a first place in the Killian.

The Senior Silver Similar Dance also saw a tie for the gold medal with Sarah McAuley of Burlington, Ont., and Melissa Cornthwaite of Keswick, Ont., finishing deadlock with Guelph's Laura Barbison and Ariel Porty.

Queen's came out on top in the Creative Dance category as well as Erin Weinkauf of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Young captured gold headed of teams from Western and Ryerson.

The Gaels final gold medal performance of the day came from Kelsey Newhook and Katie Chu, both of Toronto. They were the top team in the Intermediate Similar Pairs event.

The Gaels will next compete at the Toronto/Ryerson Winter Invitational from January 21st to 22nd. The event will take place at Varsity Arena on the campus of the University of Toronto.
