Gaels slice Lancers 5-1

Kirstin Smith tallied a goal and an assist in Queen's fifth win of the season
KINGSTON, Ont. (November 1, 2009) – Queen's women's hockey rebounded from its first loss of the season, capturing a 5-1 win over the Windsor Lancers on Sunday at the Memorial Centre.

Queen's (5-0-1) exploded for four first period goals to record their fifth win of the season while handing the Lancers (3-5-0) their fifth loss of the 2009-10 campaign.

Midway through the first period with the score 1-1, Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., accepted a power-play pass from Kirstin Smith of Toronto to take the lead. Fourteen seconds later, Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., would score lifting the Gaels to a 3-1 advantage.

Morgan's twin sister Brittany added another power play goal at 17:20 of the first period while Smith tallied another insurance goal at 4:27 of the second period to close the scoring at 5-1. Katie Duncan of Kitchener, Ont., scored the other goal for Queen's.

Windsor's Julie Hamilton of Lucknow, Ont., was the lone scorer to beat Gaels goalie Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont. Dodd Moher registered her fourth win of the season making 23 saves on 24 shots.

Queen's was ruthless in the offensive zone peppering Windsor goalie Jamie Tessier of Copper Cliff, Ont., with 46 shots. The Gaels posted a game-high 23 shots in the opening period followed by 17 in the second.

The Gaels were coming off a heartbreaking defeat to the Western Mustangs 24 hours earlier. Queen's lost to the Mustangs in an 11-round shootout on Saturday.

NOTES: The game will be broadcast on Kingston TVCogeco (local channel 13), airing on Monday night (Nov. 2) at 8:00pm. Matthew Bisson and Will Cunningham have the call of the action from the Kingston Memorial Centre… Conroy's goal in the second period was her seventh of the campaign… Queen's was 3/11 on power play opportunities… The Gaels hold second place in the OUA with 11 points, just behind the undefeated Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks who have 12 points.
