Underwood leads Queen’s to victory over Guelph

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 9, 2009) – The Queen's Gaels continued their season-long winning streak with a 31-5 win over the Guelph Gryphons.

The Gaels improved to 6-0-0 on the season and have not lost a game in the regular season for two years.

Heavy rain and a soft field did not slow Queen's down on this afternoon. From the whistle, the Gaels caught the Gryphons off guard by playing a strong attacking game and scoring two tries within the first 15 minutes of the game. The early tries were scored by Andrew Kirk of Paris, Ont., and Liam Underwood of Toronto, Ont. as they set Queen's up with the strong platform they needed going into this wet and slippery game.

With a turnover in possession to the Gryphons, the Queen's defence set forth with an aggressive attack. Queen's flanker Tim Richardson of Vancouver, B.C., halted the Gryphons from crossing the gain-line with a massive dump-tackle which was thought to be too aggressive by the official. This landed Richardson in the sin-bin and left the team shorthanded, allowing for the Gryphons to squeeze in one try.

In the second half, with Richardson back in the game, Queen's punished the Gryphons with three additional tries. Underwood led the scoring in the second half with a 40 yard sprint into the Gryphons end zone while Ryan Kruyne of Dunrobin, Ont., added two points with the conversion. Additional tries were scored by Chris Barrett of Vancouver, B.C., and Scott Kyle of Singapore, Singapore, with a conversion by Underwood.

The Gaels continue their fight for their undefeated season next week in St. Catharine's Ont. against the Brock Badgers. Kick-off is set for 3:00 pm.
