Toronto (January 23, 2009) – Despite a first set victory the Queen's women's volleyball team fell to the York Lions 3-1 on Friday. Queen's opened the game with a 28-26 set victory but York battled to take the next three 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 for the victory.
Katie Mathews of Aurora, Ont., was the Gaels top scorer with 16 points on 10 kills, four aces, and two blocks. Queen's regular-season leading scorer,
Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., produced eight kills, an ace, and one block for eight points.
The Lions' Thinesa Sriskandarajah of Scarborough, Ont., had a game high 17 points while setter Nadia Reider of Buenos Aires, Argentina had 36 assists.
The Gaels move to 8-7 on the season and remain in third place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division, two points ahead of the University of Toronto. The Varsity Blues did not play Friday.
York captures their 14th victory of the season sitting at a perfect 14-0 and first in the OUA.
Queen's resumes action next Friday against the Windsor Lancers in Windsor, Ont. The Lancers are in seventh place in the OUA West division. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
