Football (M): QUEEN'S EXPLODES FOR 16 UNANSWERED POINTS IN 32-13 PRE-SEASON WIN

Montreal (August 25, 2008) – Queen's Football ushered in the 2008 season by earning a 32-13 preseason victory over the McGill Redmen on Monday evening at Molson Stadium in Montreal.

The Gaels exploded for 16 unanswered points after being down 10-6 mid-way through the second quarter.  Highlighting Queen's surge was a four yard-run from new recruit and running back Jeff McCann of Burnaby, B.C.

Second-year quarterback Jansen Shrubb from Toronto tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Devon Sheahan of Kingston, Ont. early in the third quarter to conclude the 16-point turn-around.  Shrubb completed the game with 79-yard total passing with eight completions in nine attempts.

Veteran quarterback Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. also saw time at quarterback during the preseason match-up and proved he's more than ready to open up the 2008 season.  Brannagan completed 8 of his 13 passes for 126 yards, including a 49-yard bomb to Tim Poffley of Kingston to conclude the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C. and Mike Petranovic of Etobicoke, Ont. split time at the kicking position with Village recording two field goals and Petranovic converting one.

Neil Petrin of Sudbury, Ont., was Queen's top rusher recording 24-yards gained while 2008 CIS All-Canadian Mike Giffin of Kingston carried the ball four times for a total of 22-yards.

Defensively, Queen's was sharp posting a safety at 4:39 of the second quarter.  In all, the Gaels held McGill to a mere 17-total yards rushing, while recording one sack and two interceptions.

Justin Andersen (Calgary) opened scoring for McGill with a 12-yard field goal at 10:25 of the first quarter.  He also added a 45-yard field goal at 14:10 of the final frame.  McGill's lone touchdown came when Matt Connell (St. Bruno, Que.) made a 20-yard pass to Erik Galas (Ottawa) at 9:37 of the second quarter.

Queen's will open up the 2008 OUA regular season this coming Monday on Labour Day at Richardson Stadium.  The Gaels, who posted a 6-2 record last season will take on the McMaster Marauders with the kick off scheduled for 2:00pm.  Tickets for the game are still available by calling 613.533.2500 or at the door on game day.
