Windsor, Ont. (February 23, 2008) – Hartington, Ont. native Matt Hulse led a strong showing by the Queen’s Golden Gaels at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Track and Field Championships hosted by Windsor University this weekend.
Hulse, who set the top time in the CIS last weekend in the 1,000-metres in Montreal followed that performance by winning the 1,500 metre title on Friday stopping the timer at 3:53.30. The second-year runner was not the only Gael on the podium as his teammate Braden Novakowski of Kingston, Ont. took the bronze medal in the same race finishing just a second behind Hulse and only .18 seconds back of silver medalist Andrew Coates of Windsor.
Hulse and Novakowski joined Chris Brens of Markham, Ont. and David Burr of Forest, Ont. to take the bronze medal in the 4 x 800 metre relay. The four Gaels took third in a time of 7:46.42 five seconds behind the winning team from Windsor.
On the women’s side Leslie Sexton of Markham took home the silver medal in the 3,000 metres with a great closing kick. Sexton was in fourth heading to the final 200 metres but rallied past two runners to finish in second.
Both Gaels teams finished seventh in the standings with the men’s and women’s titles going to the Windsor Lancers.
Queen’s will now turn their attention to preparing for the CIS Championship which are scheduled March 6-8 in Montreal at McGill University.
