Kingston, Ont. (October 31, 2008) – It's no secret what's on the line... a berth into the 101st Yates Cup and additional bragging rights between the two eastern Ontario rivals. On Saturday, No. 2 Queen's Gaels will battle the Gee-Gees in the OUA semi-final matchup which is set for 1:00pm at Richardson Stadium.
Queen's puts a perfect 8-0 record to the test as they open their 2008 playoff run against a Gee-Gee squad that are coming off a 42-37 quarter-final victory over the Guelph Gryphons.
Earlier this season, the Gaels posted a 38-16 win over the Gee-Gees in Kingston, but Ottawa has showed success in the playoffs against Queen's. Queen's last legitimate playoff win against Ottawa came in 1989 when the Gaels posted a 39-18 victory over Ottawa. (Note: In 1997 Queen's was awarded a playoff win after Ottawa forfeited due to an ineligible player; the score of that game was 24-7 in favour of Ottawa)
In this year's October 11 matchup, quarterback Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. threw for 341-yards and four touchdowns while Queen's defence limited Ottawa's Josh Sacobie of Fredericton, N.B. to 202-yards passing and no majors – which was well below his season average.
Saturday's game can been seen live at 1:00pm via webcast at SSNCanada.ca and on tape delay on Cocego Kingston.
In tomorrow's other semi-final match-up broadcast live on the Score, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (7-2) travel London, Ont. to take on the No. 3 Western Mustangs. Queen's will host the Yates Cup on November 8 with a victory. If the Gaels lose, the winner of the Western-Laurier game will get home field advantage in the OUA final.
