Queen’s champions at McGill Redbird Classic Invitational

Montreal (October 19, 2008) – Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. led the Queen's Gaels to the McGill Redbird Classic title as the Gaels concluded the invitational tournament with a 2-1 record and the best point differential among all teams. Leger was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Queen's opened the tournament on Friday night with a narrow 79-75 loss to the Western Mustangs. Leger led the Gaels with 18 points while Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey earning the the most valuable player for Queen's posting 15 points and six rebounds.

On Saturday, Leger poured in 24 points combining with five defensive rebounds to aid the Gaels in their win against Toronto. The Gaels won 77-65. Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. recorded 19 points and was only one of two Gaels who posted over 10 points.

In the Gaels final game against McGill, Leger again provided the scoring punch posting a tournament high 31-points leading Queen's to a 71-67 win. Leger also led Queen's in rebounds with 10. Ogden, Ondul and Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. all recorded 10 point games (Ondul -11).

Ondul and Leger were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Next week the Gaels will travel to Quebec City to participate in another invitational tournament which features Carleton, Laval and the University of Waterloo. Queen's open's its OUA regular season against Waterloo on November 7 at 8:00pm.
