David Butcher

Dave Butcher is entering his seventh season as Head Coach, Queen's Men's Rugby.

Butcher guided the Gaels to an OUA Silver Medal and Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship bronze medal in 2021.

In 2019, Butcher led Queen’s to their third straight OUA Championship and a berth in the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship, where they captured the bronze medal.

In 2018, the Gaels had a perfect regular season, earning a second consecutive OUA Championship. The Gaels also earned a berth in the Canadian University Rugby Championships but fell to UBC in the Championship final.

In his first year as head coach the Gaels ran the table with an undefeated season that resulted in an OUA championship victory at home over Guelph. The Gaels went the entire season without ever trailing in a single game.

Butcher has been involved in rugby for more than 20 years, first as a professional player and then as a coach and sports development professional working with provincial and national teams in both Canada and the United Kingdom. In addition to his current role with Rugby Ontario, Butcher is the technical resource coach, national A team assistant coach (forwards), national U20 coach (forwards), and national scrum development coach for Rugby Canada. Prior to that, he was the high performance coach for Scottish Rugby.
