The collaboration between Queen's Athletics and Recreation and the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies offers students a unique three-year, experiential learning mini-stream where young coaches will work with varsity athletes in a high-performance setting. Interns are responsible for on-the-floor coaching in the High Performance Training Centre, warmup planning and implementation, optimizing recovery practices, administering testing/monitoring, practice/game support, and assisting with programming. The internship provides young coaches with the skills to pursue a career in sport and/or health while also achieving school credit, making this program unlike anything offered by other post-secondary institutions in the country.
The mini-stream is highly competitive and is a three-year commitment. Students will gain valuable experience on the floor coaching/observing as a Level 1. They will also be required to take KNPE 345: Science and Methodology of Training. In their second mini-stream year as a Level 2, students will earn more responsibility with warmups, coaching cues, testing administration and leadership roles on the floor. In their final year as a Level 3, students will be the Lead S&C coach for their appointed team. Students will be involved in all aspects of performance planning and physical preparation in direct consultation with the S&C Staff and Head Coach.
