As a first year student-athlete at Queen's, you will have the opportunity to participate in our Gaels 101 orientation program. Facilitated by our carefully selected SAAM's (Student-Athlete Academic Mentors), Gaels 101 is a series of mandatory Sunday Seminars and Study Hall Sessions throughout the Fall term. These sessions are designed to assist first year student-athletes with their transition from high school to university. Student-athletes will be grouped based on their academic program and matched with an upper year SAAM to form their Study Hall groups.Â
The objective of the SAAM Program is to have student-athletes leave the program with the confidence and skills to thrive in their new learning environment. While acting as an incredible networking tool, Gaels 101 will support first-years athletes in balancing their academics and athletics, providing the necessary mentorship and resources to succeed.Â
Many student-athletes enjoy this program because it allows them to stay on track with assignments and prepare for midterm and final exams. Our SAAMs are able to assist with subject-specific tutoring while fostering good study habits and time management skills, which they have mastered as high achieving student-athletes.Â
The Peer Mentor Program is an upper year support program delivered by the Student Experience Office. The program is designed to match upper-year peer mentors with Queen's students who are second year and above who believe that they would benefit from the support of a Mentor.Â
The goal of the program is to help students develop the skills they will need to be successful at university. Mentors provide support and model university survival skills and mental health-coping strategies. The program aims to build confidence, encourage healthy lifestyles, and contribute to a satisfying university experience.Â
Requesting a mentor is easy! The first step is filling out a short intake survey, once complete a peer mentor will contact you via email to set up your first meeting!Â
