Queen's Football defeated the Waterloo Warriors 49-22 in their home opener under the lights at Richardson Stadium Saturday night.
Queen's opened the game with the first 20 points of the game, powered off touchdowns by
Yanik Daigle and Ashton St. Germain, and two field goals by
Tyler Mullan, who continues to climb Queen's Football's all-time scoring list, before cruising to the 27 point win.
Mullan (Arts & Science) opened the scoring with a 50-yard field goal before
Alex Vreeken and Daigle (Life Sciences) connected on a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Vreeken (Kinesiology) led Queen's offence with a career-high 424 passing yards, to go along with three touchdowns, in the win.
After Waterloo scored 10 points, Queen's responded with a third Mullan field goal of the first half and
Logan Walton's first of two touchdowns in the game.
The highlight reel plays continued in the second half for Queen's.
After Mullan added a fourth field goal of the game in the fourth quarter, Vreeken and Walton (Economics) connected for a highlight-reel 86 yard touchdown. Then defensive back
Iain St Arnault (Economics) returned an interception 25 yards for a pick-six to help cement the win.
To go along with Vreeken's career-high 424 passing yards, Queen's finished with 200 yards on the ground, led by
Jayden Gurzi-MacDonald (Economics) with 82 yards on 12 carries, and
Jayce Baldwin (Health Studies) with 60 yards on eight carries.
Walton led all Queen's receivers with five receptions for 191 yards.
On defence,
Brandon Spence (Kinesiology) led Queen's with a team-high seven tackles (four solo, six assisted).
Dan Mikwete (Criminology) also finished the game with an interception while
Carter Martin (Arts & Science) recorded a sack in the win.
With the victory, Queen's Football is 2-0 to start the season. Queen's will travel to Ottawa, Ont. to take on the Carleton Ravens next week, Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1 PM.
