The ARC hosted a meaningful matchup on Saturday as Queen's Women's Basketball faced the York Lions in their annual Shoot for the Cure game, honouring the Canadian Cancer Society.
Queen's came out competitve, holding a 17–16 lead after the first quarter. Brooke Hussey (Kinesiology) set the tone early, attacking the rim, hitting mid-range jumpers, and creating opportunities off the dribble.
The Gaels turned up the intensity in the second quarter. Effective pick-and-rolls and fast-break baskets from Hussey and Kiyara Letlow (Kinesiology) pushed Queen's to a 33–22 halftime lead. Letlow dominated the glass with eight first-half rebounds, securing second-chance points and anchoring the defensive rotation.
The third quarter saw Queen's assert full control. Tight man-to-man coverage, seamless switching on screens, and clogging the paint limited York to just three points. Offensively, the Gaels ran crisp motion sets, knocked down open threes, and executed pick-and-rolls with precision, taking a commanding 57–25 lead into the fourth.
Queen's closed out with a 78–34 victory. Hussey led with 19 points, Letlow posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Bella Gaudet (Commerce) and Ally Smith (Kinesiology) each added 11 points.
When asked about their dominant season, and this afternoons performance – Hussey stated, "Good, good team win. 15th win is pretty big. I thought they [York] played physical, and I thought we did a good job matching that."
Asked about the team's 15th win and how they plan to keep the streak rolling, Hussey added, "Just continue doing what we are doing. We have a lot of different assets on this team. When teams try to take on one, we have a lot of different players who can do different and great things."
Queen's returns to the ARC next Friday, January 23, to host the Algoma Thunderbirds. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m., fans are encouraged to come out to support the team as they pursue their 16th consecutive victory! Tickets are available at gogaelsgo.com
