KINGSTON, Ont. (April 1, 2025) – Queen's Ultimate standout
Tyler Gunasekera was awarded the Jack Jarvis Trophy, recognizing the Queen's University Varsity Clubs Men's Sports Athlete of the Year for the 2024-25 season at the 89th annual Colour Awards banquet at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) on Tuesday night.
The Jack Jarvis Trophy, established by Queen's boxing alumni, honors the Varsity Club male student-athlete in a fourth or fifth year who demonstrates academic excellence, competitiveness, leadership, sportsmanship, dedication, and outstanding contributions to a team. The award pays tribute to Jack Jarvis, who coached the Queen's boxing team for 33 years.
A dominant force throughout a tenure with Queen's Ultimate, Gunasekera (Kinesiology) delivered another standout season, earning selection to Team Canada for the 2025 U24 World Championships in Logroño, Spain from June 21-28. Previous international experience includes representing Canada twice at the U20 Open and U24 Mixed levels.
Evolving into the team captain, the Vancouver, B.C., native played a pivotal role in guiding Queen's Men's Ultimate to a 49-14 record, securing seven tournament victories and claiming National Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals.
"Tyler has been a leader on the field since the moment he put the Q on his chest," said Queen's Ultimate Head Coach Peter Galbraith. "Tyler is active in the Queen's athletics community participating in motionball over several years as well as working within the S&C stream supporting athletes across the university.
