Queen's Women's Rugby defeated their OUA rivals, the Guelph Gryphons, 28-26, in the bronze medal match at the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship Sunday afternoon in Vancouver, B.C., finishing the national championship tournament on the podium.
With the win, the Gaels medaled at the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship for the sixth straight time, setting a new U SPORTS record. Queen's has won the bronze medal at the tournament the past three years, after earning silver in 2022, gold on home pitch at Nixon Field in 2021, and silver in 2019. There was no tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was a tight game throughout, but the Gaels never trailed after overcoming an early 5-0 lead by the Gryphons, and Queen's defeated Guelph for the third time this year in all competitions to earn the national bronze.
Mya Brubacher (Political Science),
Tattyannah Jackson (Arts & Science),
Kennedi Stevenson (Arts & Science), and Steph Douglas (Arts & Science) all scored tries for the Gaels in the tight two-point win, while OUA Player of the Year and U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian
Lizzie Gibson finished a perfect four-for-four on conversions for eight points.
