The Queen's Gaels defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 74-65 on the road to extend their undefeated streak to six. Leading the Gaels offense was Bella Gaudet (Commerce) with 15 points which featured 3 three-pointers and 4 free throws. Alongside their teammate was Haley Barbieri (Arts & Science), putting up 13 points, including 2 three-pointers. Fifth year Mikayla McFarlane (Kinesiology) led the team in rebounds with 9, while also putting up 10 points offensively.
The Gaels generated a slight 17-14 lead after the first quarter, with the help of five free throws from Kiyara Letlow (Kinesiology) and two layups by McFarlane.
Laurentian called the first timeout of the game in the second quarter, as Queen's stood strong on their rebounds. The Voyageurs managed to narrow the Queen's lead to 19-18, however, the Gaels responded with the first three-pointer of the game made by Barbieri. Both teams dug deep, as Laurentian managed to tie the game up at the 29th point, forcing the first Queen's timeout. Going into halftime, the teams were tied 32-32.
The Voyageurs found momentum coming out of halftime, putting up six consecutive points. This resulted in a Queen's timeout as the away team attempted to regroup and maintain composure in order to stay in the game. Gaudet and Katrina Renon (Arts & Science) both made three-pointers, tying the game back up at 38-38. The Gaels struggled with their offensive fouls which slowed their momentum. Despite this, the teams remained closely matched, as they ended the third quarter 47-47.
In the final 10-minutes of play, the Gaels fell into their groove, making three three-pointers. Queen's demonstrated composure, as they began to distance themselves on the scoreboard. The Gaels played hard in the final quarter, finishing the game with a 74-65 win.
Up next, the Gaels will look forward to playing the Nipissing Lakers tomorrow at 4pm on the road. Queen's improves their record to 6-0 and they will continue to battle tomorrow to extend their streak.
