GAELS TAKE DOWN EXCALIBUR IN THREE STRAIGHT SETS

The Queen's Gaels sweep the Trent Excalibur 3-0 in a dominant home game on Friday night. The Gaels pick up their third win of the season and continue forward undefeated. Leading the attack was third year Alex Brdarevic (Engineering) with 11 kills and 2 service aces, while fourth year setter Chris Zimmerman (Arts) made an outstanding 34 assists. Third year outside hitter Ben Carr (Arts & Science) secured an impressive 10 kills, 1 service ace, and 6 digs, while first year libero Carson Francis (Economics) matched their teammate with 6 digs.

Outside hitter Carr opened up the game with a well-placed service ace that stunned the Excalibur. Shortly after, Brdarevic came through with a second ace for Queen's, resulting in a Trent timeout. The Gaels quickly distanced themselves on the scoreboard with a 9-1 lead, looking swift and confident on offense. A 5-point streak, including back-to-back service aces by fourth year middle Izaak Zabjek (Kinesiology), brought Queen's to a 16-5 lead. The Gaels had no issues closing out the set 25-15 as they went up 1-0.

The Excalibur seemed to find some momentum in the second set, challenging the Queen's offense and defense. The teams continued to tie up to their 14th points, when the Gaels began to connect well on offense. Fourth year Reed Venning (Arts & Science) made back-to-back service aces, forcing a Trent timeout as the Gaels held a 16-14 lead. Zabjek and Zimmerman were connecting well, setting up three kills for Zabjek after the away team's timeout. The Gaels tore away with their lead, and closed out the set 25-18 off of a kill from Venning.

Trent found their first lead of the game, 9-6, in the third, forcing the first Gaels' timeout of the game. Intensity was high, as the teams continued to match each other up to their 15th points. Four consecutive Queen's points, including two kills by Carr and one by Venning, allowed the Gaels to find the first substantial lead of the third set, 19-15. The Gaels held strong on offense, and offered few opportunities for the Trent attack to get through their defense. The home team finished the set with a 25-20 lead, sweeping the Excalibur in three straight sets.

Up next, the Gaels will look forward to playing the Excalibur again tomorrow evening at 5:30pm at the ARC. Queen's extends their win streak to three and their record to 3-0.
