On Saturday night, Queen's Women's Hockey wrapped up their weekend road trip with a match up against the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo.
Queen's controlled much of the opening frame in Waterloo, piling on shots and keeping Laurier pinned in their zone. The Golden Hawks struck first on a quick counterattack to take a 1–0 lead, but the Gaels answered soon after — Sara Di Filippo (Concurrent Education) fired a shot from the left dot to tie it 1–1, assisted by Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science).
The Gaels grabbed the lead midway through the second when Taya Leonard (Kinesiology) scored at 10:37, assisted by Carys Collie (Life Sciences) and Sophy Aldred (Arts & Science). Laurier answered late in the frame, tying the game 2–2 with five minutes left. The teams headed to the third all even.
The Gaels came out flying to start the third, and it didn't take long for them to regain control of the game. Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) found the back of the net early in the frame, with Sophie Hudson (Chemical Engineering) picking up the assist. Just over a minute later, Taya Leonard (Kinesiology) buried their second of the night at 1:16 to give Queen's a two-goal cushion. Laurier added one late with under a minute to play, but the Gaels held strong to secure a 4–3 win — their fifth victory of the season.
Notably, goaltender
Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) had 44 saves in tonight's contest.Â
