Seven Queen's Women's Rugby players were honoured as OUA First Team All-Stars for the 2025 season, the conference announced Wednesday.
The seven Gaels named OUA First Team All-Stars included
Lizzie Gibson, who was also named the OUA Women's Rugby Player of the Year,
Jayne Armatage,
Maxie Grant,
Maddy May,
Jiggy Schonfeld,
Kennedi Stevenson, and
Madi Thompson.
Queen's Women's Rugby Head Coach
Dan Valley was also named the OUA Women's Rugby Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
"It's very cool to celebrate the members of our program that get recognized by the conference for their efforts in the regular season," said Queen's Women's Rugby Head Coach
Dan Valley. "Collectively we work so hard year-round, so it's awesome to see that work recognized. It's also a bit bittersweet because I feel like we've got no shortage of team members that are worthy of OUA All-Star status. At the end of the day, it's a pleasure to see so many Gaels recognized here, but in that same breath, I know they (this year's recipients) would be the first to tell you that these awards aren't possible without the collective efforts of our whole squad, day-in, day out."
Gibson (Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs) led the OUA in scoring with an incredible 157 points on the season, more than twice the second leading scorer in the conference. Making the point total more impressive is that it was accomplished in just five games as the Gaels won one of their games by forfeiture of the opposing team.
"To see Lizzie recognized as both OUA POY and 1st Team All-Star is a very fitting way to end her OUA career. Â On the field she has been a pivotal part of our team's performance in all phases of play, and the grit and determination that she trains and competes with every day have helped shape our squad's identity."
2025 was Gibson's second highest point total in a single season, behind only 2022 when Gibson finished the year with 176. Gibson is Queen's Women's Rugby's all-time leading scorer with 569 career points, surpassing Gaels legends
Lauren McEwen (219 career points) and Sophie de Goede (208 career points).
Armatage (Arts & Science) was named an All-Star at Prop after a strong season, recording two tries while helping the Gaels to an undefeated regular season.
"Jayne's performance this year has been phenomenal. She has been a consistent leader of an incredible Forward Pack - she sets a calm, cool, collected tone that keeps our crew moving in the right direction."
Grant (Arts & Science) was named an All-Star at Second Row after recording three tries on the season for 15 points. Grant was also named an OUA All-Star in 2024.
"If you had told me in Maxie's 1st year that she'd be graduating as a 1st Team OUA All-Star, I probably wouldn't have believed you. Since then, she's been the hardest working member of our squad day-in, day-out for the past 4 years. This recognition is so special simply because it has been earned with quiet, consistent hard work and determination, day-after-day, week-after-week."
May (Arts & Science) was named an All-Star at Hooker after recording five tries on the season, the fifth most for the Gaels in 2025.
"To see
Maddy May get recognized as an OUA All-Star this year is pretty special. She has quietly been a workhorse for us for 3 seasons now, and every step of the way has been an incredible teammate."
Schonfeld (Kinesiology) was named an All-Star at Back Row after recording two tries on the season.
"Jiggy has been a force of nature so far this season. She has grown into one of the most complete, well-rounded players in the OUA."
Stevenson (Arts & Science) was named an All-Star at Back Three after recording 10 tries on the season, tied for the team-lead with Gibson. Stevenson was named an OUA All-Star for the second straight season, after also being named the OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year in 2024.
"Kenny is just such a joy to watch train and compete - she's got such a positive approach to training and competition, and she is growing into a very complete rugby player. The best part is, she's still just scratched the surface of her potential. This is an incredibly well-deserved award, and probably not the last time she is recognized at this level."
Thompson (Arts & Science) was named an All-Star at Scrum Half.
"Tommy has been this good for a few seasons now, and so it is so cool to see her finally earn this recognition. She doesn't show up on the score sheet particularly often, but it is her ability to get around the park and keep us operating in 5th gear that has allowed us to achieve so much success so far."
