Queen's Men's Soccer took on the Laurentian Voyagers in their home opener on Sunday Sept. 7— the Gaels emerged with their best result of the season, tying the Voyagers 0-0.
In addition to their best result, Queen's recorded their first clean sheet of the season, the result of a strong defensive effort.
"I think we defended well. We kept a clean sheet, which is our first of the season and it's been one of our goals. We protected our goal on our home field so that's a positive," Head Coach Kasy Kiarash said.
In the tie, Goalkeeper
Connor Adams bagged six saves, placing him fourth in the OUA for saves.
"Not only is he an incredible goalkeeper, but an incredible person, leader on the team, and one of our captains. Whenever your backed against a wall you expect your goalkeeper and leader to step up and he did that for us today," Kiarash remarked.
Despite the lack of goals, the Gael's forwards put up an aggressive presence in the first half, with 8 shots compared to Laurentians' 4.
Matt Ciavarro led the charge for Queen's nabbing 4 shots in the first, 2 of which were on goal.
In the second, Queen's looked to switch things up substituting in Nico Mesiano,
Jure Trutina,
Dante Britto, and
Andrea Gortana.
The Gaels were unable to find the back of the net despite the changes, however, kept the same dominant defense that characterized the first half.
"We were able to keep a clean sheet today and we hope to do the same thing next week and hopefully score a few as well," Kiarash added.
The Gaels are back in action at Richardson Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 3:15pm, taking on the Toronto Varsity Blues. Tickets are available on the
Queen's Gaels Ticket website.
