Queen's Men's Soccer Ties Voyageurs to Cap-Off Weekend Away

(29/09/24) - Sudbury, ON.  The Queen's Men's soccer team are feeling deja vu as yet another game ends in a 1-1 tie during their weekend away up North.  The Gaels Sunday afternoon match against the Laurentian Voyageurs ended no differently than the match 24 hours prior against the Nipissing Lakers which also saw the score of 1-1.

The Gaels came out strong dominating the field in the first half of the match chalking-up five shots on goal, and securing the lead with a goal in the 31st minute of the game by forward, no.29 George Papadopolous (Arts and Sciences), assisted by midfielder, no. 17 Damiano Singuglia (Arts and Sciences).

Papadopolous continues to be a key leader for the Gaels by demonstrating effective and commanding efforts on the turf.  The Gaels forward, in his rookie year, has accumulated four goals for the Gaels in their last five games played, proving his importance to the team in their chase for a playoff spot.

The match was a test of the Gaels' stamina and teamwork as the Voyageurs battled back attempting to close the one-goal lead.  With both teams demonstrating determination for ball possession, the Gaels finished the first half in the lead while keeping Voyageurs goalie Nate Shull busy.

The second half of the game was a spectacle of attack and aggression by both teams.  With yellow cards being handed out to both the Voyageurs and visiting Gaels, the match was in a state of high-intensity.

While the Gaels were able to hold off the Voyageurs offensively throughout the game, almost securing a shutout, the Gaels lost the lead after a penalty kick resulting in a goal in the last two minutes and 30 seconds of the match.  With the game now tied, the Gaels battled until the end of additional time to try to break the tie and secure a victory.

With Saturday and Sunday's draws, the Gaels demonstrate that they can take the lead early and do not leave the match without a persistent fight, further, nor do they allow their opponents to be granted a win.

The Gaels head back home with two tied games added to their season record, allowing them to maintain their position as seventh in the OUA East standings with the record of 2-4-3.

Catch the Gaels' next game at their home field of Richardson Stadium, Saturday, October 5th at 3:15 PM, against the TMU Bold who currently hold a record of 4-1-2 and are fourth in the OUA East.
