As members of the Canadian Women's Sevens team, two Queen's student-athletes struck silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics this week.
Chloe Daniels and
Taylor Perry were both part of the silver medal team, who upset Australia in the semifinal match to earn their spot in the gold medal game on Tuesday.
Notably, Daniels helped to secure a spot in the semifinals for Canada, securing a 19-14 win over the host France team with a match-winning try in the final minutes of the game. Daniels also added two conversions in the match and a try and a conversion in the gold medal match.
"It means everything. I hope we've inspired some young girls in Canada to join rugby and grow the game," Daniels told Rugby Canada. "I don't know how many people on the outside were expecting it, but I thought within the group, we had lots of belief. We started the year off ninth, and now we're ending the Olympics with a silver medal. I think that goes to show all of our hard work throughout this entire year. We're so grateful for [our staff] and everyone on the wider team who put in the work. It's just an absolutely amazing accomplishment."
The silver medal win was historic for Rugby Canada as it is the best-ever Olympic performance for Canada in rugby sevens.
Also on the roster for Team Canada were Olivia Apps and Caroline Crossley, who both have a connection to Queen's University. Apps attended Queen's University and was a 2016 committed recruit for Queen's Women's Rugby but has not suited up for the Gaels. Crossley is enrolled in Smith School of Business' Certificate in Business program as part of their partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee.
