Maddie O'Connor named Queen's University Varsity Clubs Women's Sports Athlete of the Year

KINGSTON, Ont. (March 26, 2024) - Maddie O'Connor of Queen's Women's Squash was named the Marion Ross Trophy recipient as the Queen's University Varsity Clubs Women's Sports Athlete of the Year for the 2023-24 season during the 88th annual Colour Awards banquet at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) Tuesday night.

The Marion Ross Trophy, named in honour of Queen's first athletic director, was presented by the Women's P.H.E. Alumnae Association in 1981. Awarded annually to a Varsity Club female student-athlete in her 4th or 5th year who best displays qualities of scholastic achievement, competitiveness, leadership, sportsmanship, dedication and exceptional contributions to her team.

O'Connor (School of Medicine) was undefeated in the Jesters League and OUA Championships.

O'Connor helped Queen's Women's Squash win their ninth consecutive OUA Championship this past February, being named an OUA All-Star and the OUA MVP for the second straight season.

"Maddie is the most talented squash player that I have had the privilege to coach," said Queen's Women's Squash Head Coach Lisa Coates. "She works hard and is very much respected by her teammates as well as adversaries within the OUA. To best describe Maddie's court movement, we like to say that she floats around the court, always with a smile on her face. She plays with class and with heart."
